Mazus reptans (Creeping Mazus)

Creeping Mazus, Mazus

Mazus reptans, Creeping Mazus, Mazus, Ground Cover

Fast-growing, Mazus reptans (Creeping Mazus) is a semi-evergreen perennial forming an attractive carpet of narrow, sparsely toothed, bright green leaves, 1 in. long (2.5 cm). The foliage remains fresh-looking throughout the growing season and well into the fall. In late spring to early summer, the foliage is studded with hundreds of purplish-blue, tubular flowers with yellow and white markings held in small clusters. Vigorous, Creeping Mazus spreads quickly through rooting stems. It tolerates foot traffic and can be used as a small-scale groundcover or lawn substitute, in rock gardens or between stepping stones. Evergreen in mild winter areas.

  • Grows up to 2 in. tall (5 cm) and 6-12 in. wide (15-30 cm).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, it is best grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soils.
  • Creeping mazus makes a great ground cover for shady areas of woodland gardens and is perfect for underplanting shrubs or edging.
  • Virtually pest and disease free.
  • Native to the Himalayas.
