Great Companion Plants for Oriental Hybrid Lilies

Oriental Lilies, Companion Planting

Oriental Lilies, Companion Planting, Oriental Hybrid Lilies

Known as the most flamboyant personalities within the world of lilies, Oriental Lilies make perfect partners with other plants and help create strikingly beautiful combinations in the garden. Since they appreciate some shade around their roots while keeping their foliage and ravishing blossoms in the air and sunshine, they welcome the company of neighboring plants such as annuals, perennials, bulbs, grasses or shrubs. However, a few rules need to be respected to ensure your Lilies will thrive.

Usually the last lilies to bloom, Oriental hybrid Lilies are derived from the crossing of interspecific hybrids and species Lilies such as Lilium auratum, Lilium japonicum, Lilium nobilissimum, Lilium × parkmanii, Lilium rubellum and Lilium speciosum (but excluding all hybrids of these with henryi). The most famous representative of the Oriental hybrid Lilies is certainly the flat-faced ‘Stargazer’, which is probably the most successful cut flower ever, being upward-facing, strongly fragrant and long-lasting.

Blooming over a long period of time, from mid to late summer and even into fall for some varieties, Oriental Hybrid Lilies are characterized by their immense flowers, intense fragrance and rich colors.

Planted in spring or fall, they thrive in full sun to part shade locations and require a slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Good moisture is required and dry soils should be avoided. Oriental Lilies are frightened of alkalinity as it kills them. If your soil is alkaline, you should grow these wonderful lilies in pots or containers.
