Campanula, commonly referred to as bellflowers, is a massive genus including more than 300 species of, mostly perennials but also some annuals and biennials. Some are stately, tall garden plants which are excellent choices for borders or cutting. Others are mat-forming or creeping and are perfect for edging or in rock gardens.

Some Campanulas experience both a dense and rapid growth, which helps to suppress weeds while creating a terrific blanket of flowers and foliage. They are perfect candidates for banks and slopes or areas that are difficult to maintain. Rewardingly floriferous, they form a carpet of nodding bells and are hard to beat regarding floral display. Some produce so many flowers that they nearly cover the entire plant.

Easy and accommodating, Campanulas enjoy sunny or partly shaded sites with well-drained soils. If sited properly, they require little, if any, maintenance.

Below is a list of wonderful species and cultivars that will provide a wealth of colorful flowers and foliage.

Great Campanulas as Flowering Groundcovers

Growing Conditions: Campanulas thrive in well-draining soil and prefer full sun to partial shade. They’re fairly adaptable but will flourish with consistent moisture.

Maintenance: Once established, Campanula is relatively drought-tolerant. Deadheading or removing spent flowers can encourage more blooms, but it’s not essential. In colder climates, a layer of mulch can offer protection during winter.

Uses: Campanula is an excellent choice for edging paths, filling gaps in rock gardens, or cascading over walls. Its dense growth suppresses weeds, making it a practical and attractive groundcover.

Companion Plants: Campanula pairs beautifully with roses, geraniums, and lavender, among others. Its cool-toned flowers contrast well with warm-colored blooms like daylilies or coreopsis.

Pest and Disease: Generally, bellflowers are low-maintenance and have minimal issues. However, slugs and snails can sometimes be a problem.

Final Thoughts: If you’re in search of a flowering groundcover that combines beauty with ease of care, Campanula is a top contender. Its enchanting blooms not only add a splash of color but also bring a touch of whimsy to any garden setting.
