Growing Daylilies

Here’s how to successfully grow daylilies in your garden:

  • Choosing the Site: Daylilies are highly adaptable but perform best in well-drained soil with exposure to at least six hours of sunlight each day. However, they can tolerate a range of soil types and light conditions, including partial shade.
  • Planting: You can plant daylilies in either spring or fall. Dig a hole wider and deeper than the root system of the plant. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the crown (the part where the stem and roots meet) is around 1 inch below the surface. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly.
  • Watering: Daylilies need at least 1 inch of water per week, whether from rainfall or manual watering. They’re drought-tolerant once established but will bloom more profusely with regular watering.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth appears. A second application in late summer can boost fall blooming.
  • Mulching: A layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture, control weeds, and protect the plants’ roots in winter.
  • Deadheading and Dividing: Remove spent flowers and seed pods to encourage more blooms. Divide plants every 3-5 years in early spring or fall to maintain vigor.
  • Pest and Disease Control: Daylilies are resistant to most pests and diseases. If you observe any issues, like daylily rust, apply an appropriate fungicide or pesticide.

With their vibrant colors and long blooming periods, daylilies can make a significant impact in your garden with relatively little maintenance. Enjoy the process of growing Hemerocallis!
