Phragmipedium (Slipper Orchids) - Expert Tips for Gardening Success

Lighting
While they need more illumination than Phalaenopsis or Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium orchids thrive in mild to partial shade. Optimal positions include east or south-facing windows. Ensure they also receive adequate air circulation.
Temperature
Optimal temperature ranges for Phragmipedium orchids are 55°F (13°C) during the nighttime and up to 85°F (29°C) in the day.

Hydration
Given their lack of water-storing pseudobulbs, ensure the medium remains consistently moist but never waterlogged. Use rainwater, distilled water, or low-salt city water. During watering, thoroughly rinse the plants.

Ambient Humidity
Aim to sustain humidity levels between 50-70%. Achieve this by placing the pot on a tray filled with moist pebbles.

Nutrition
Post-watering, fertilize weekly. If potted in a fir-bark mix, opt for high-nitrogen fertilizers like 30-10-10. Depending on the season, adjust the strength of the fertilizer. Monthly clear water rinses help avoid root burns due to excess salts. In colder months, fertilize only once every four weeks.

Repotting
Once the blooming phase ends and you observe new growth, it’s time to repot using a fine bark-perlite blend. These orchids prefer snug pots. When shifting to a new pot, ensure it’s just 1-2 inches larger than the previous one. Handle roots delicately to prevent breakage and ensure the new growth base touches the potting mix.

Propagating
Post-flowering, larger orchids can be split into groups of three to five growths by gently separating or slicing through the leaf fans.

Monitoring for Pests
Generally, Phragmipedium orchids remain free from diseases. However, watch for aphids, glasshouse red spider mites, and mealybugs.
