Phygelius (Cape Fuchsia) - Expert Tips for Gardening Success

Location: Cape Fuchsia thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, it appreciates a bit of afternoon shade to protect from the intense sun.

Soil: Plant in well-draining soil. It prefers moderately fertile ground but can tolerate a range of soil types.

Watering: While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering in the initial stages is vital. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Over time, reduce watering, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out between watering.

Mulching: A layer of organic mulch will retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil over time.

Fertilization: Feed Cape Fuchsia with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage robust growth and flowering.

Pruning: After the blooming season, trim back spent flower spikes to encourage a second flush of blooms. In early spring, cut back the plant by about half to rejuvenate and shape it.

Pests and Diseases: Phygelius is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, watch out for aphids and whiteflies. If any sign of disease, like powdery mildew, appears, treat promptly.

Propagation: Propagate Cape Fuchsia by taking softwood cuttings in spring or semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer.

Companion Plants: Pair with plants that offer contrasting textures, like ornamental grasses, or complementary colors, such as purple salvia or lavender.
