Angelonia (Summer Snapdragon)
Summer Snapdragon, Angel Flower
What is Angelonia?
Angelonia, also known as summer snapdragon or angel flower, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Plantaginaceae. The most commonly cultivated species is Angelonia angustifolia. These plants are native to Mexico and the West Indies and are popular for their showy, colorful flowers and ability to thrive in hot, humid conditions.
Angelonia is often called summer snapdragon because of its snapdragon-like flowers and its ability to thrive in hot, humid conditions.
Growth Habit: Angelonia has an upright, bushy growth habit with well-branched stems that hold its flowers above the foliage. The lance-shaped leaves are typically dark green and slightly glossy.
Size: These plants typically reach heights of 12 to 36 inches (30-90 cm) and spread 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm) wide, depending on the variety.
Flowers: Angelonia flowers resemble small snapdragons and grow in spikes that are 8 to 12 inches (20-30 cm) long. They emit a sweet, grape-like fragrance, which attracts pollinators.
Blooming Season: the plant blooms continuously from late spring to early fall, providing long-lasting color in the garden.
Hardiness: Angelonia is a tender perennial, suitable for USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11. In colder climates, it is grown as an annual.
Uses: Angelonia is ideal for use in flower beds, borders, containers, and hanging baskets. Its upright growth habit also makes it an excellent choice for cut flower arrangements.
Drought tolerance: Angelonia is moderately drought-tolerant once established, but it performs best with consistent moisture.
