Blue Noble Fir

AGM Award
Abies procera 'Glauca', Blue Noble Fir, Noble Fir, Evergreen Conifer, Evergreen Shrub, Blue Conifer, Blue Fir

Stately, Abies procera ‘Glauca’ (Blue Noble Fir) is a large sized conical conifer with short, bright blue-gray needles on both the top and underneath. In fall, eye-catching, large blue cones, up to 9 in. long (25 cm), appear upright on the branches before turning reddish brown over time. The bark is equally attractive: smooth, silvery gray when young, becoming red-brown, rough and fissured on more mature trees. The slender habit and pretty blue foliage make this Noble Fir stand out in the garden, specifically in the spring when the new growth is at its most intense blue.

  • Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 30-50 ft. high (9-15 m) and 30-40 ft. wide (9-12 m) to form a long, columnar trunk and conical crown with short, nearly horizontal branches. This tree grows at a slow to medium rate, up to 12-24 in. per year (30-60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in rich, slightly acidicmoist, well-drained soils. Will tolerate thin, rocky soils with good moisture.
  • Perfect as a distinctive specimen plant in the landscape.
  • Watch for aphids, adelgids and honey fungus. Easy to grow and easy to care for.
  • No pruning required, except for removal of occasional vertical shoots.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Native to the USA.
