Endemic to the coast of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, Ceanothus impressus var. nipomensis (Arroyo Grande Lilac) is a bushy, evergreen shrub noted for its abundant clusters of fragrant, dark blue flowers in mid and late spring. Thickly branched, its dark brown stems are clad with small, oval, highly ridged and wrinkled dark green leaves which become sweetly fragrant on warm days. A moderate grower, this spectacular shrub needs the cool coastal climate to make it through the hot season. It is extremely drought tolerant once established. A great California Lilac selection for coastal gardens.

  • Grows with a dense, rounded habit, up to 8 ft. tall (240 cm) and 10 ft. wide (300 cm).
  • Thrives in dry, sandy, well-drained soils in full sun. Provide a sheltered position. Requires little or no water in summer. Drought and salt tolerant.
  • Excellent plant for sunny areas, banks and slopes, hedges and screens. Perfectly suited to coastal gardens as this plant doesn’t mind salt-laden sea air.
  • Easy to grow, this plant is difficult to transplant once established.
