Enriching any garden’s color scheme, Dianthus caryophyllus ‘King of the Blacks’ (Carnation) is an eye-catching, loosely-tufted, herbaceous perennial with a profusion of clove-scented, dark burgundy-red, double flowers, up to 2 in. across (5 cm), atop firm stems. Elegantly rising above a low mound of evergreen, gray-green, linear foliage, the velvety, ruffled blossoms are produced in succession from late spring to mid-summer. Adding contrast in the garden, this hardy carnation is perfect for the sunny border, and patio containers and makes exquisite and long-lasting cut flowers.

  • Grows up to 18-24 in. tall (45-60 cm) and 10-12 in. wide (25-30 cm).
  • Thrives in full sun in average, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. Good drainage is essential for winter hardiness. Performs best in areas with cool summers.
  • Extremely versatile, this carnation is ideal for beds and borders, cottage gardens, or containers.
  • Easy to grow, and deer resistant, its clove fragrance attracts an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds
  • Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering and promote a compact habit.
  • Divide clumps every second spring, or plant new ones to maintain vigor.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
  • Dianthus caryophyllus is native to the Mediterranean area.
