Abies pinsapo 'Horstmann' (Spanish Fir)

Spanish Fir 'Horstmann', Hedgehog Fir 'Horstmann', Spanish Silver Spruce 'Horstmann'

Abies pinsapo 'Horstmann' (Spanish Fir) is an exceptional compact evergreen conifer of rounded or spreading rounded habit in youth, becoming densely pyramidal with age. The short, stiff, vivid blue needles are arranged radially around the branchlets. In early spring, the branch tips are adorned with beautiful small violet-red pollen cones, which stand out against the blue foliage. The upright seed cones are greenish pink to purple when young, turning light brown over time. Slow-growing at first, 1-4 in. per year (2-10 cm), but once mature, the plant will likely accelerate from that point unless controlled by careful pruning. Abies pinsapo 'Horstmann' is useful in rock gardens.

  • Grows up to 3 ft. high (90 cm) and 2 ft. wide (60 cm) after 10 years.
  • Performs best in full sun or part shade in rich, slightly acidic, consistently moist, well-drained soils. Best in full sun. Prefers a sheltered position and is not tolerant of urban pollution. Drought tolerant when established.
  • Keep an eye out for aphids, adelgids, root rots, needle rust, and twig blight.
  • Propagate by seed or grafting.
  • Abies pinsapo is native to southern Spain and northern Morocco.
