Eucryphia x nymansensis 'Nymansay, Nyman's Hybrid Eucryphia 'Nymansay', Eucryphia 'Nymansay', Evergreen Tree, White Flowers

Stately, Eucryphia x nymansensis ‘Nymansay’ is a fast-growing, broadly columnar evergreen tree with large, simple, and trifoliate, strongly toothed, glossy green leaves year-round. In late summer and fall, abundant ravishing clusters of large, cup-shaped, honey-scented white flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), with prominent bosses of yellow stamens cover the tree. They stand out against the dark, glossy-green leaves. Nymansay is a naturally occurring hybrid between two Chilean species, E. glutinosa and E. cordifolia. Beautiful through the seasons, this gorgeous flowering evergreen tree is one of the great glories of the garden in late summer. Probably the most popular of the eucryphias, it is often seen in woodland gardens, where other trees shelter this beauty from cold winds.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 20-50 ft. tall (6-15 m) and 6-12 ft. wide (2-4 m).
  • Performs best in full sun or part shade in acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Prefers shaded roots with the canopy in full sun. Will tolerate alkaline soil. Plant in early spring in a sheltered position.
  • A charming addition to beds and borders, wall-side borders, coastal gardens, or cottage gardens. Because of its liking for acid soil, it is a natural companion for rhododendrons, kalmias, pieris, and magnolia.
  • No routine pruning is necessary. Remove diseased, damaged, congested, or crossing shoots.
  • Generally pest and disease free.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings.
