Heuchera 'Tokyo' (Coral Bells)

Coral Bells 'Tokyo', Alum Root 'Tokyo', Coral Flower 'Tokyo'

Great for shade, Heuchera 'Tokyo' (Coral Bells) is a clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial forming a large tight mound of lobed, bright lime green leaves adorned with a silver sheen on their upper surface. From mid-summer to mid-fall, masses of small, bell-shaped, brilliant red flowers bloom on burgundy stems rising up to 15 in. (37 cm) above the foliage. Fast-growing, this showy heuchera combines extremely well with a wide range of colors and helps create wonderful plant combinations in gardens or pots. A sturdy performer that is not only easy to grow, but also requires little maintenance. Wonderful as an accent, in containers or in mixed borders.

  • Forms a basal mound up to 10 in. tall (25 cm) and 21 in. wide (52 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in rich, humusy, moist, well-drained soils. Thrives in dry shade, once established. Salt tolerant.
  • It is attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and is often ignored by deer.
  • A spectacular addition to beds and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens, coastal gardens, and woodland gardens and is ideal as a groundcover, edger along paths, or in containers. Fabulous when planted in groups!
  • Keep an eye out for vine weevil, leaf, and bud eelworm.
  • Propagate by division in autumn. Divide clumps in spring every 3-4 years.
  • Remove stems of faded flowers to promote additional bloom. Apply winter mulch after the ground freezes to help prevent root heaving.
