Hosta ‘Stained Glass’ (Plantain Lily) is a medium-sized perennial forming an overlapping mound of slightly convex, widely oval, bright golden-yellow leaves with irregular dark green margins and prominent veining. Large, pale purple, tubular flowers adorned with darker stripes appear in summer, rising on scapes 30 in. long (75 cm). A very eye-catching hosta for specimen planting, this sport of ‘Guacamole’ is also suitable for planting in mixed containers.

  • Easy grower, Hosta ‘Stained Glass’ grows 16 in. tall (40 cm) and spreads over time to 32 in. (80 cm).
  • Recipient of multiple awards, including the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society and the American Hosta Growers 2006 Hosta of the Year award.
  • A full sun to part shade lover, it is best grown in rich, moist, well-drained soils. Quite sun tolerant with adequate moisture, this plant is not fussy about soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions.
  • Perfect for the shade garden, mixed with other perennials in bed and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens or containers. Great for underplanting shrubs and roses.
  • Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant’s growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
  • Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
