Salvia involucrata ‘Bethellii’ (Rosy-Leaf Sage) is a woody-based perennial or branching shrub boasting a profusion of tubular vibrant cerise-rose flowers encased by pink bracts. Blooming from midsummer to fall, the blossoms are borne in dense terminal spikes and attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The lush foliage of ovate, rich green leaves, underlined with reddish veins, is handsome in its own right. Drought tolerant, Rosy-Leaf Sage provides a strong presence in the late season garden, adding flamboyant rosy-magenta color to the fall tones.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 3-6 ft. tall (90-180 cm) and 4-6 ft. wide (120-180 cm).
  • Thrives in full sun to light dappled shade in light, moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant once established. Protect from cold, drying winds.
  • Perfect for beds and borders, wall-side borders, city gardens, coastal gardens, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens or containers.
  • Keep an eye out for rosemary beetle, slugs, snails, capsid bug, leafhoppers, foot and root rots, powdery mildews and verticillium wilt. Deer resistant.
  • Minimal pruning needed. Cut down any winter damaged growth in spring.
  • Softwood cuttings at any time of year as long as suitable growth is available. Divide established clumps in spring.
  • Salvia involucrata is native to the Mexican states of Puebla, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz, growing in shady places such as the edge of forests.
