Prized for its variegated foliage, award-winner Salvia officinalis ‘Icterina’ (Sage) is a compact, evergreen sub-shrub or perennial with strongly aromatic, oblong, pale green leaves broadly edged in creamy gold. In early summer, it sends up whorls of two-lipped, pale, purplish blue flowers on short, upright flower spikes. Enjoying both ornamental and culinary qualities, Salvia officinalis ‘Icterina’ is a favorite of many cooks and gardeners for its unique flavor and lovely foliage. This foliage plant is great for the herb garden and wonderful in perennial borders and cottage gardens.

  • Grows in clumps up to 12-24 in. tall (30-60 cm) and nearly as wide.
  • Enjoys full sun (light shade is tolerated) in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Avoid excessive winter wet.
  • This superb cultivar is really an interesting plant that makes an attractive accent in beds and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, herb gardens or containers.
  • Virtually disease free, but watch for slugs, snails and leafhoppers.
  • Drought tolerant and deer resistant, it is attractive to bees, butterflies and occasionally to hummingbirds.
