Award General
Solidago Sphacelata 'Golden Fleece', Goldenrod 'Golden Fleece', Solidago 'Golden Fleece', Fall perennials, Fall Flowers, Yellow flowers

Compact and slowly spreading, Solidago sphacelata ‘Golden Fleece’ (Goldenrod) is an outstanding perennial that bears abundant, airy floral spires of bright yellow flowers. Borne on multi-branched stems, they arise from rosettes of heart-shaped, dark green leaves that form an attractive, low-growing ground cover. This Goldenrod blooms later than most Goldenrods and provides a bold splash of color in the late-season garden. Easy to grow, low care, and fairly trouble-free, it brings cheerful color to the sunny border or containers and is a great source of nectar for butterflies!

  • Blooming for many weeks from late summer to late fall, this eye-catching beauty is a good choice for high flower production, sturdy habit, and disease resistance.
  • Winner of the Internationale Stauden-Union’s Award in Switzerland in 1994. Has been highly rated by the Chicago Botanical Garden’s evaluation notes in 2000.
  • Grows up to 12-18 in. tall (30-45 cm) and will spread slowly to over 3 ft. (90 cm). This Goldenrod is a well-behaved garden plant and can be mixed with other perennials without fear of it becoming invasive
  • Thrives in full sun or light shade, in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. It is not fussy about soils and tolerates clay soils, dry soils, or poor soils. Drought tolerant,
  • A vital ingredient of late summer and fall borders, cottage gardens, prairies, or meadows where it adds color and texture. It looks lovely next to Asters, Sedums, Boltonia, or Ornamental Grasses. Also valued for the excellent quality of its cut flowers.
  • Attractive to birds and butterflies, it is deer resistant!
  • Remove spent flowers to promote additional blooms

Solidago, commonly known as Goldenrod, belongs to the Asteraceae family which also includes yarrows, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers. These showy upright perennials with their soft plumes of flowers are ideal companions for late-season plants such as Ornamental Grasses, Rudbeckia, or Sedums in mixed borders. While often taking the blame for ragweed, Goldenrod is not the cause of hay fever.
