Lewisia - Cliff Maids

Prized by rock garden enthusiasts, Lewisias are strikingly beautiful perennials, all native to western North America. When in full bloom in the spring, they are hard to beat in terms of floral display with their profusion of brilliantly colored flowers. The most popular species are Lewisia cotyledon and Lewisia tweedyi, two evergreen plants with flat rosettes of fleshy, succulent leaves. They are ideal subjects for rock gardens, wall crevices, and raised beds.

Lewisia cotyledon 'Elise Mixed' (Siskiyou Lewisia)

Award-winning Lewisia cotyledon 'Elise' (Siskiyou Lewisia) is an evergreen perennial forming a pretty rosette of fleshy, spoon-shaped dark green leaves. In late spring and summer, occasionally later, it is topped with lovely, open sprays of brightly colored, funnel-shaped flowers. Unlike any current Lewisia cotyledon cultivars, 'Elise' blooms in the first season without a cold period and is exceptionally heat tolerant.

Strikingly beautiful, Lewisia cotyledon (Siskiyou Lewisia) is an evergreen perennial forming a substantial rosette of fleshy, spoon-shaped dark green leaves. In late spring and summer, occasionally later, it is topped with lovely, open sprays of brightly colored, funnel-shaped flowers, up to 1 in. across (2.5 cm). Opening in succession, the flowers range from pale pink to deep magenta to vibrant yellow, salmon or orange, with each petal often shading between multiple colors.

Lewisia rediviva (Bitter Root) is a small ground-hugging perennial forming a rosette of narrow succulent green leaves. In early spring to early summer, it is topped with large, deep pink to nearly white flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), packed with up to 9-15 petals. Borne on short stalks, the flowers are the largest of the genus with their numerous petals surrounding a cluster of stamens.
