Soldanella alpina (Alpine Snowbell)

Alpine Snowbell, alpine Soldanella, Blue Moonwort, Jewel of the Alps

Soldanella alpina (Alpine Snowbell) is a charming evergreen perennial forming small clumps of pretty, leathery, rounded leaves leaves. In early spring, umbels of nodding, purple to violet flaring bells, 1/2 in. long (1.5 cm), appear on short stems above the foliage. They are strikingly fringed on the edge. Easy to grow, Alpine Snowbell is suitable for the rock garden, alpine house or peat bed. Like most alpine plants, it is happiest in moist, well drained, rich soil in bright shade.

  • Grows up to 3-5 in. tall (7-12 cm) and 4-5 in. wide (10-12 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun with midday shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils. Protect from excessive winter wet.
  • No serious insect or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids.
  • Excellent addition to rock gardens, alpine beds or containers.
  • Propagate by seed or softwood cuttings.
  • Native to the Alps and Pyrenees.
