A very popular cactus, Echinopsis chamaecereus (Peanut Cactus) is a mat-forming cactus with slender, sprawling, finger-like stems. Initially erect, the pale green stems, up to 6 in. long (15 cm) but only 4 in. tall (10 cm), feature 8-10 ribs and are covered in soft, small white bristles. Blooming in flushes in late spring and early summer, funnel-shaped vermilion-red flowers, 2-3 in. long (5-7 cm), are produced in great quantities. Peanut Cactus blooms freely indoors if conditions suit it. Easy to grow, this trailing cactus is perfect for hanging planters and containers. It can be grown as a houseplant, but also grows well outdoors in frost-free climates. It is reported to be cold-hardy down to 18°F (-8°C) for short periods.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 4 in. tall (10 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun. Water moderately when in growth, sparingly when dormant. This Echinopsis needs a period of cool rest in winter to produce flowers abundantly. Drought tolerant.
  • Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer 2 or 3 times in the growing season.
  • Propagate by seed or offsets. Offsets can be detached and planted immediately as they root easily with no assistance when they touch the ground.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Keep an eye out for mealybugs. Susceptible to fungal diseases if over-watered.
  • Native to Argentina.
