Fast-growing, Hibiscus acetosella ‘Panama Red’ (Cranberry Hibiscus) is a compact, tropical herbaceous perennial, primarily grown for its remarkably beautiful, burgundy-red, deeply cut foliage. As decorative as the leaves of Japanese maples, the evergreen leaves are held facing outwards on long stalks and retain their rich, carmine-red color through even the hottest days. From late summer to fall, bright red, funnel-shaped flowers are infrequently produced. Bred for the hot and humid gardens of the South, ‘Panama Red’ is ideal for edible landscaping as both the foliage and flowers add color and flavor to salads.

  • Typically grows up to 4 ft. tall (120 cm) with a spread of 2 ft. (60 cm).
  • Full sun to part shade lover, this plant is best grown in well-drained soils. Apply a balanced fertilizer each spring and summer
  • Fairly pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Plant in mixed borders or large containers.
