Syringa x persica (Persian Lilac)

Persian Lilac

Very showy, Syringa x persica (Persian Lilac) is a compact, densely branched, deciduous shrub of graceful, rounded habit, with wide panicles, 2-3 in. long (5-7 cm), of richly fragrant, pale lilac flowers in late spring. The upright, arching branches are clad with large, lanceolate, dark blue-green leaves which remain attractive in summer. Powdery mildew may be a problem on leaves in some areas. Persian Lilac is heat-tolerant and suitable for warmer climates. An outstanding large background shrub or a great informal hedge or screen.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 4-8 ft. tall (120-240 cm) and 5-10 ft. wide (150-300 cm).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in fertile, humus-rich, alkaline to neutral, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Tolerates light shade, but the best flower production occurs in full sun. Appreciates mulching when planted in full sun. Needs good air circulation.
  • No serious insect or disease problems. May get leaf-mining moths, thrips or be affected by lilac blight
  • Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds but is deer resistant.
  • Plant as a specimen or massed in mixed shrub borders for dramatic blooms. Use it in the perennial border to add structure to a bed. Great flowering shrub that is perfect for flowering hedges or foundation plantings.
  • Prune immediately after flowering.
  • Sterile hybrid that can be propagated by softwood cuttings.
