Regarded by many to be one of the most beautiful vines, Thunbergia mysorensis (Brick And Butter Vine) is a vigorous evergreen climber with large, elliptic leaves, 4-6 in. long (10-15 cm), and spectacular flowers dangling down from the foliage. Borne in striking pendulous racemes, up to 3 ft. long (90 cm), the 2-lipped flowers, 2 in. long (5 cm), feature a gaping yellow throat and reflexed dark red lobes. They bloom year-round in mild winter climates. Rich in nectar, they attract hummingbirds. The stems twine clockwise and as they mature this produces an ornamental effect, similar to Wisteria floribunda. Train this vine on a pergola, arbor, or other overhead structure to allow the flowers to dangle.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Will grow up to 15-20 ft. tall (450-600 cm) and 5-8 ft. wide (150-240 cm).
  • Thrives in organically rich, fertile, moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Appreciates afternoon shade in hot summer areas.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for glasshouse whitefly, glasshouse red spider mite, aphids, and scale on indoor plants.
  • Pruning is best completed in spring by thinning the crowded stems.
  • Propagate by seeds and softwood cuttings.
  • Native to India.
