Tibouchina granulosa (Purple Glory Tree)

Purple Glory Tree

Tibouchina granulosa, Purple Glory Tree, Flowering Shrub, Purple Flowers

A breathtaking sight when in full bloom, Tibouchina granulosa (Purple Glory Tree) is a large, sprawling, tropical, evergreen shrub or small tree boasting a lush foliage of glossy, dark green leaves, 5-8 in. long (12-20 cm), with prominent longitudinal veins. Deep rose to violet flowers, flaring open to 2 in. across (5 cm), bloom in showy clusters. Blooming intermittently throughout the year, Tibouchina granulosa is quite versatile. It can be trained as a standard or espaliered against a west-facing wall receiving at least five hours of full sun. It can also be trained on a trellis or arbor as a vine. Perfect for the mixed shrub border, as a specimen or in containers.

  • Grows up to 15-20 ft. tall and wide (4-6 m).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is best grown in moist, fertile, well-drained soils. Prefers some afternoon shade in hot summer climates.
  • Propagate by cuttings.
  • Pinching new growth helps increase branching and will enhance the floral display.
  • Keep an eye out for scales and mushroom root rot.
  • Native to Brazil.
