This drought-resistant Mediterranean garden is low maintenance and requires little water to thrive. The plants consist of south US natives, succulents, and drought-hardy plants from the Southern Hemisphere laid out in broad drifts of striking colors and textures. We can admire with delight the large exotic blooms of Leucospermum ‘Scarlet Ribbon’ (Pincushion) which compete for attention with those of Aloe striata (Coral Aloe).
The rosettes of Kalanchoe luciae (Paddle Plant), are also very attractive with their rounded leaves adorned with vibrant red-wine tips and topped by striking flowering stems arising from their center.
A magnificent and compact Agave, ‘Kissho Kan’, with perfectly symmetrical rosettes of soft silver-blue leaves, resembles more of a rose than an agave.
Contrasting in shape and color with all the above plants is the very ornamental Yucca gloriosa ‘Bright Star’ (Spanish Dagger) with broad, sword-shaped leaves adorned with bright ivory edges.
Cool weather or water stress will bring out pink shades, creating a tricolor effect. What a glorious plant composition!
