Vanda (Orchids)

Vanda, Vanda Orchids, Fragrant Orchids, Easy to grow Orchids,

Coveted around the world, Vanda is a genus of 50 orchid species found throughout tropical Asia, into the Philippines, and down to Australia. Prized for their huge and long-lasting flowers, Vanda orchids are medium to large monopodial orchids: they grow from a single stem.

Vanda orchids are usually epiphytic (growing on trees), occasionally lithophytic (growing on rocks) orchids with distichous, strap-shaped leaves.

Their axillary inflorescences often bear large and showy flowers. Their blossoms come in a wide variety of colors, including white, violet-blue, pink and yellow. As an added bonus, some species and hybrids are sweetly fragrant.

These warm-growing tropical orchids are grown in the millions throughout Asia and in America. Most Vandas are grown in baskets that allow their long roots to hang freely.

Vanda orchids are not a good choice for beginners as many species require bright light, warm temperatures, high humidity, ample water and strong air movement.  Some of these requirements can be difficult to follow at home.

Growing Vanda Orchids

Light
Vanda orchids grow best when exposed to very bright light with some partial shade, especially in midday in summer. Provide strong air movement. Leaves should be a medium green, not dark green. Dark green leaves indicate not enough light.

Temperatures
Most Vanda orchids need a minimum night temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C) and a maximum daytime temperature of 95°F (35°C). Days should be warm and humid for optimum plant growth. Minimum night temperature recommended is 55°F (13°C).

Water
Water heavily during the active growth period, making sure the roots always dry quickly after watering. As a result of this, and their extensive root system, Vanda orchids are mostly grown in slatted-wood baskets, or in pots with a coarse potting medium. Water sparingly in the winter or during cloudy weather.

Humidity
Maintain adequate humidity (80%) by setting the plant on a tray of gravel, partially filled with water.

Fertilization
Fertilize with a balanced (such as 20-20-20) fertilizer applied full strength once a week during warm weather or use a one-quarter-strength solution at every watering. During cool or cloudy weather, apply fertilizer once every 2-4 weeks. Use a high-phosphorus fertilizer (such as 10-30-20) every third application to promote flowering.

Potting
Potting is necessary when the rhizome of the plant protrudes over the edge of the pot or the potting medium starts to break down. This should be done in the spring. Use a coarse medium, whether fir bar, tree fern or charcoal, and work it around the roots. Keep shaded, humid, but drier at the roots until new root tips grow. Do not overpot.

Propagation
Propagate by division when the plant overflows the pot.

Pests and diseases
Vanda orchids are generally disease free. Keep an eye out for aphids, glasshouse red spider mite and mealybugs.

Tip for reblooming

Vanda orchids should bloom at least once a year. If your orchid does not flower, move it to a location where it will receive more light and sun. This may resolve the problem.
