A Charming Mediterranean Flagstone Pathway
Plant Combinations, Spring Borders, Summer Borders, Fall Borders, Winter Borders
Who wouldn't want to stroll along this beautiful flagstone pathway? Interspersed with a planned wilderness of Mediterranean plants, its palette of long-lasting pastel colors includes low maintenance and water-wise evergreen perennials. Amongst them, Armeria maritima (Sea thrift), is a charming little plant that is ridiculously easy to grow and is perfect for edging walks or borders. Low-growing, it forms bouquets of eye-catching rounded clusters of pink flowers that float atop slender stalks from spring to summer.
Dietes iridioides (Fortnight lily) adds a vertical element with its 2-4 ft. tall white flowers resembling small Japanese Irises. They appear on branched stalks over an incredibly long season, extending from spring to fall and sometimes well into winter in mild climates. The flowers last one day but are quickly replaced by new ones as each stalk carries a seemingly endless supply of buds.
Enriching the air with its delightful scent, Lavandula (Lavender) contributes to the beauty of this scenery with its profusion of purple flower spikes which contrast with the silvery-gray evergreen foliage.
Gaps between stepping stones can be amongst the most awkward spaces in the garden. Too often, they become a catchall for weeds. Not here, thanks to Dymondia margaretae (Silver Carpet), a slowly spreading evergreen perennial forming a dense silvery-green mat over time and choking out virtually all weeds. Growing no more than a few inches, this little plant tolerates foot traffic, making it a great choice for filling in around pavers.
This most charming walkway has been designed by Zeterre Landscape Architecture.
