Arabis alpina subsp. caucasica (Mountain Rock Cress) is a mat-forming, evergreen perennial with loose rosettes of toothed, gray-green, oval leaves and masses of fragrant, white flowers held in loose racemes in spring. Attractive to butterflies, Mountain Rock Cress is effective for the front of the garden or rock walls.
- Rises up to 8-10 in. tall (20-25 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm).
- Best in full sun in gritty or sandy, well-drained soils. Tolerates hot dry conditions and infertile soils. Drought tolerant.
- Perfect for banks and slopes, as a groundcover, rock gardens, or containers.
- Keep an eye out for aphids, arabis midge, flea beetles, downy mildew, white blister. Mountain Rock Cress is deer and rabbit resistant.
- Plant should be cut back severely after flowering, or by midsummer branches will be nude except for the terminal leaves.
- Propagate by softwood cuttings in summer, or by division.
- Native to Europe, Canada and parts of the northern U.S. from Maine to Wisconsin south to Tennessee.
