Carex pseudocyperus (Sedge Hop)

Cypress-like Sedge, Cypresslike Sedge, Sedge Hop, Gray Sedge

Carex pseudocyperus (Sedge Hop) is a tuft-forming, slowly-spreading perennial boasting bright green grassy leaves 2-3 ft. long (60-90 cm). In summer, decorative dark green spikelets appear among the foliage and hang from long stems above the foliage. This moisture-loving plant is an excellent choice as a marginal or bog plant.

  • Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) and 2 ft. wide (60 cm). Will slowly spread by rhizomes and self-seeding.
  • Performs best in full sun or light shade in moisture-retentive soil. Can grow in shallow water, up to 3 in. deep (7 cm).
  • This is a showy accent plant for beds and borders, containers, rain gardens, bog gardens, near ponds and streams where it adds wonderful character and texture to plant combinations.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids.
  • Cut back in the autumn as the foliage fades.
  • Propagate by seed sown in autumn, or by division from mid-spring to early summer.
  • Native to Temp. & Subtropical Northern Hemisphere.
