Clarkia amoena (Satin Flower)
Satin Flower, Farewell to Spring, Godetia, Clarkia grandiflora, Godetia grandiflora
Clarkia amoena (Satin Flower) is an upright annual boasting ravishing racemes of satiny, cup-shaped, slightly flaring flowers, 2-3 in. (5-7 cm), from late spring to early-mid summer. Single or double, the blossoms can be lilac, pink, red or lavender, often with a blotch or spot at the base of each petal. Borne on erect to lax stems clad with lance-shaped leaves, they give way to dry capsules, which split open when mature to release their numerous seeds.
- Grows up to 24-30 in. tall (60-75 cm) and 10-12 in. wide (25-30 cm). May reseed in the garden in optimum growing conditions.
- Thrives in full sun or part shade in poor to moderately fertile, slightly acid, moist but well-drained soil. Appreciates good air circulation. Performs poorly in hot and humid summer weather.
- Great for beds and borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens or containers.
- Attractive to bees and butterflies but deer resistant.
- Cut back after flowering.
- Generally pest free. Keep an eye out for foot rot and stem rot.
- Propagate by seed sown in-situ in early spring or autumn. Start seed indoors in pots 6-8 weeks before last frost date or sow directly in the garden as soon as the danger of frost has passed.
- Native to coastal northwestern California.
