Diervilla Kodiak® Orange (Bush Honeysuckle) is a small, densely branched, deciduous shrub forming a colorful mound of lance-shaped, pointed, shimmering shiny leaves. Emerging orange in spring, the new leaves change to green as the season progresses before turning glowing orange-red in the fall. In early to mid-summer, a profusion of bright yellow flowers appear in the lower leaf axils and at the branch tips. The subtle blossoms are magnets for bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Native to North America, this Bush Honeysuckle is not invasive like certain honeysuckles are. It thrives in a wide range of soil and light conditions from full sun to shade and including dry shade. Its drought tolerance, resilient root system, and ability to re-sprout make it a good candidate for erosion control.

  • Grows up to 3-4 ft. tall and wide (90-120 cm).
  • This plant is best grown in full sun to partial shade in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerant of full shade and dry shade, but the best color is obtained in sun. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Excellent choice for banks and slopes, shrub borders, low hedges, hummingbird gardens, butterfly gardens, or woodland gardens. Its suckering habit makes it useful for naturalizing and mass plantings.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is usually pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Diervilla blooms on new wood. Prune in early to mid-spring and apply a controlled-release fertilizer. Avoid pruning in winter, as it may lead to frost damage of new shoots.
  • Propagate by softwood cuttings.
