Echinocereus stramineus (Strawberry Hedgehog Cactus) is a small clumping cactus forming large colonies of as many as 100 or more stems at maturity. The stems are composed of 10 to 13 ribs with fairly deep furrows between them. Very large and beautiful, bright pink to purple-red flowers, 5 in. across (12 cm) decorate the plant in summer. They give way to edible, strawberry-tasting fruits, 2 in. long (5 cm), that are devoured by wildlife. Echinocereus stramineus is a lovely plant for a rock garden or containers where it will form attractive, bold clumps.

  • Grows up to 12 in. tall (10-30 cm) and forms clusters to 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm) containing several hundred stems.
  • Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun. Water regularly when in growth. Excellent drainage is critical to avoid rot issues. Keep the plant dry in winter. Drought tolerant.
  • Great for desert gardens, rock gardens, succulent gardens or Mediterranean gardens. Great in decorative containers too.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Susceptible to fungal diseases if overwatered.
  • Deer and rabbit resistant. The flowers produce nectar and are attractive to birds and bees
  • Native to the Southwestern USA (Texas, New Mexico) and Mexico.
