Noted for its exceptionally striking fall foliage, Fraxinus angustifolia ‘Raywood’ (Claret Ash) is a magnificent, fine-textured, deciduous tree with a straight trunk and a compact, elegant crown. Upright or oval when young, the canopy becomes full and rounded with age. The foliage of pinnate, lustrous, dark green leaves with lanceolate leaflets, creates a light shade beneath the tree. The leaves turn rich shades of red to purple in the fall before dropping to the ground. In spring, its inconspicuous flowers do not produce seeds. Often known as the Claret Ash, Raywood is a vigorous medium-sized tree with outstanding ornamental features. It makes a splendid accent tree in the landscape.

  • Grows up to 40-50 ft. tall (12-15 m) and 20-30 ft. wide (6-9 m).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in slightly alkaline, well-drained soils. Although this tree can tolerate wet sites, it will perform much better in well-drained conditions. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. This tree is reportedly resistant to anthracnose foliage disease and Ash lygusbug which attacks other Ashes.
  • Requires pruning to develop a strong structure. Space main lateral branches along the trunk and keep internal secondary branches intact to develop good branch structure.
  • Surface roots can be a problem on wet sites and on clay soil.
  • Propagate by seed or grafting.
