Flowering cherry trees are typically planted for the majestic yet delicate beauty of their flowers. With flowers resembling a ballerina’s petticoat, award-winning Prunus ‘Ichiyo’ makes a dramatic statement when in full bloom. Opening from pink buds, the profuse double, shell pink flowers, held in pendulous long-stalked clusters of 3-4 flowers, fade gradually to almost white as they age.

Underplanting your flowering cherry tree with spring bulbs contributes to an even more spectacular floral display. In this garden, Prunus ‘Ichiyo’ is underplanted with Camassia leichtlinii ‘Blue Danube’ (Camass) for a superb mid-late spring spectacle.

You may want to plant other spring-flowering bulbs in the fall, such as tulips and daffodils. They will extend the color display in your landscape and be in full bloom before your flowering cherry begins to leaf out in, which means even these sun-lovers do well under the canopy of your deciduous cherry tree. Enjoy!
