Native to the western U.S., Madia elegans (Common Madia) is a showy annual with a profusion of bright yellow daisy-like flowers, up to 2 in. across (5 cm), often adorned with a reddish brown spot at the base of each ray flower petal. Blooming for weeks from mid-summer to fall, the flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bumblebees, honeybees, and butterflies. They are sensitive to bright sunlight and respond by curling up their ray flowers during the day. Closing the flower head reduces the surface from which water can evaporate, saving the flowers from drying out. The flowers give way to edible seeds (achenes). Birds and small mammals feast on the seeds, which used to be favored by the Pomo and Miwok Native Americans. The flowers are borne atop hairy, branching stems clad with narrow, linear to lance-shaped, mid-green leaves. The ferny foliage and stems are hairy, exuding a pleasantly aromatic oil, hence the common name Tarweed. Tolerant of heat and drought, Common Madia brings prairie charm to the sunny landscape and is perfect for wildflower gardens. Plant in drifts for great impact, and ensure you have enough for the vase! Freely self-seeds in optimum conditions.
