Ornithogalum magnum (Star of Bethlehem) is a bulbous perennial boasting huge, upright, pyramid-shaped racemes packed with small, star-shaped, white flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), adorned with a green stripe on the reverse. Blooming in late spring to early summer, the luminous blossoms open in succession from the bottom up. They rise above the basal foliage of grass-like, blue-green leaves, which starts to die back just before flowering. A good choice for mixed borders and containers. Excellent cut flower.
- Grow up to 12-24 in. tall and wide (30-60 cm). Will happily naturalize without being invasive.
- Thrives in full sun to part shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. tolerates dry soils once established.
- Virtually disease and pest free. Deer and critter resistant.
- To be planted in fall. Propagate by digging bulbs, removing the offsets and replanting.
- All parts may cause severe discomfort if ingested, and the sap may irritate skin. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans.
