Central Mexico Organ Pipe, Mexican Fence Post Cactus, Organ Cactus, Cereus marginatus, Lemaireocereus marginatus, Lophocereus marginatus, Marginatocereus marginatus, Stenocereus marginatus
Stiff and imposing, Pachycereus marginatus (Mexican Fence Post Cactus) is a handsome columnar cactus that develops unbranched stems from the base when mature. The exceptionally straight, upright, dark green stems can reach 15 ft. or more (450 cm) in cultivation. Each rough stem possesses 5-7 ribs, which are lined with spines, mature specimens bearing shorter spines than juvenile specimens. During the spring, pink to green flowers develop from the areoles. They are followed by edible, spiny red fruits. The fruits can be used to make jams and jellies as well. The way Mexican Fence Post seeds itself is by droppings, the fruits ripen and fall to the floor starting a cycle for new plants to grow. Native to Central Mexico, the Mexican Fence Post is most commonly used today for landscaping and is valued as an accent, specimen, or character plant in arid, tropical landscapes. It is also useful to build an effective windbreak barrier. Prized for its low maintenance and low water needs, it is easy to grow. Known for its durability in the heat, this desert plant is reported to be cold-hardy down to 24°F (-4°C) for short periods.
