Polaskia chichipe (Chichipe) is a handsome columnar tree-like cactus, usually with a short trunk and many curved branches. Its green stems are lined with 9-12 wavy ribs, often with reddish coloration of the edges in winter. Blooming in late spring or early summer, it produces small pinkish white or yellow-green flowers which open at night and remain open until the following night. They give way to small edible reddish fruits. Native to Central Mexico where it grows in sparsely vegetated areas on rocky cliff sides, and in shallow soils, Polaskia chichipe is valued as an accent, specimen, or character plant in arid landscapes. Slow-growing, Polaskia chichipe is cold intolerant. It cannot be exposed to freezing temperatures or it may die.

  • Grows up to 12-15 ft. tall (360-450 cm).
  • Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun. Needs full sun avoiding only the harshest summer sun. Water regularly in summer but allow to dry fully before watering again. Keep almost completely dry during the winter months. Drought tolerant.
  • Great for desert gardens, rock gardens, succulent gardens or hedges or living fences.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Susceptible to fungal diseases if over-watered. Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by seed or stem cuttings.
  • Polaskia chichipe is endemic to the warmer areas of central Mexico.
