Hollyleaf Redberry, Rhamnus crocea ssp. ilicifolia, Rhamnus crocea var. ilicifolia
Native to the western United States, Rhamnus ilicifolia (Hollyleaf Redberry) is a dense evergreen shrub with roundish, holly-like, dark green leaves. Clusters of inconspicuous, small yellow-green flowers are produced in spring. They attract bees, moths, butterflies, and other pollinators. The blossoms are followed by copious berries loved by birds and other wildlife. The berries turn from lime green to red and then to black as they mature. A most beautiful western native that is easy to grow, drought tolerant, and easy to maintain. It is useful for erosion control on dry steep hillsides. It also makes a lovely hedge as it tolerates pruning well. The dense foliage makes it a good plant for foundation plantings or as a background shrub.
