Rhamnus ilicifolia (Hollyleaf Redberry)

Hollyleaf Redberry, Rhamnus crocea ssp. ilicifolia, Rhamnus crocea var. ilicifolia

Rhamnus ilicifolia, Hollyleaf Redberry, Rhamnus crocea ilicifolia, Evergreen Shrub, red Berries,

Native to the western United States, Rhamnus ilicifolia (Hollyleaf Redberry) is a dense evergreen shrub with roundish, holly-like, dark green leaves. Clusters of inconspicuous, small yellow-green flowers are produced in spring. They attract bees, moths, butterflies, and other pollinators. The blossoms are followed by copious berries loved by birds and other wildlife. The berries turn from lime green to red and then to black as they mature. A most beautiful western native that is easy to grow, drought tolerant, and easy to maintain. It is useful for erosion control on dry steep hillsides. It also makes a lovely hedge as it tolerates pruning well. The dense foliage makes it a good plant for foundation plantings or as a background shrub.

  • Grows up to 10-15 ft. high (300-450 cm) and 7-10 ft. wide (210-300 cm). Slow-growing, this plant adds 12-24 in. per year (30-60 cm).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in a wide variety of soil types but prefers rocky well-drained soil. Water maximum once per month in summer until the plant is established. Drought tolerant.
  • Perfect for banks and slopes (erosion control), as a specimen or accent plant, or as a hedge.
  • Subject to few pests and diseases.
  • Can be pruned to control size or shape.
  • Propagation by seed. Fresh seeds need no treatment. Stored seeds need 2.5-3 mos. stratification.
  • Native to the western United States, including Arizona, California, Nevada, and Oregon.
