Trichostema lanatum (Woolly Bluecurls)
Woolly Bluecurls, Romero
Outstanding for its long blooming season and brilliant flowers, Trichostema lanatum (Woolly Bluecurls) is a many-branched evergreen shrub with narrow aromatic pointed leaves, 2 in. long (5 cm), brilliant green above and woolly white beneath. The rosemary-like leaves are rolled under and emit a wonderfully sweet and fruity fragrance when bruised. Magnificent clusters of curly, woolly, royal-blue flowers with long arching stamens appear in 12 in. fuzzy spikes (30 cm) from late spring through summer. Flower stalks and calyces are covered in woolly hairs of blue, pink, or white. The bloom period can be extended into fall if spent flowers are removed. Rich in nectar, they attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Woolly Bluecurls requires sharply drained soils and tolerates very dry conditions to look spectacular. It is a great choice for desert gardens or water-wise gardens where it adds amazing beauty and drama. Makes a great cut flower too.
- Grows up to 3-5 ft. tall and wide (90-150 cm).
- Performs best in full sun, in poor, well-drained soils. Provide regular water the first year after planting. Water once per month in summer once established. Drought tolerant.
- Generally pest and disease free. Attracts bees, butterflies and birds but is deer resistant.
- Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Seed is difficult.
- Native to the California Coast Ranges as far north as San Benito County and as far south as northern Baja California, Mexico.
