Silene zawadskii, Zawadski's Campion, Melandrium zawadskii, Saponaria zawadskii, White flowers, Drought tolerant plants

A long-lasting summer bloomer, Silene zawadskii (Zawadski’s Campion) is a low-growing, evergreen perennial forming a thick cushion of tufted rosettes, above which arise pure white flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), on short stems. Blooming for weeks in summer, each blossom is adorned with five petals and an inflated pale green calyx. Rich in pollen, they attract butterflies and other pollinating insects. Undemanding, Zawadski’s Campion makes an excellent rock garden specimen.

  • Grows up to 8 in. tall and wide (25 cm).
  • Thrives in full sun in moderately fertile, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Excellent drainage is essential.
  • Virtually pest free. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew.
  • Easily propagated from seed.
  • Native to the eastern Carpathians Mountains.
