Tephrocactus articulatus var. inermis, Pine Cone Cactus, Glochidless Spruce Cone Cholla, Glochidless Pine Cone Cactus, Tephrocactus articulatus var. diadematus f. inermis

Tephrocactus articulatus var. inermis (Pine Cone Cactus) is a nearly spineless upright succulent with silver to powdery blue knobby stem segments that resemble pine cones. The segments, up to 1-8 in. long (2-20 cm), usually grow one or two new segments each year from the stem tips. Bell-shaped white flowers, up to 2 inches (5 cm) long, adorned with yellow centers appear in spring. Easy to grow, this remarkable cactus is perfect for containers. It can be grown as a houseplant, but also grows well outdoors in frost-free climates. Protect from cold, as this species is frost sensitive and only hardy to 15°F (-9°C) for brief periods. Handle with care as the segments are very easily detached from the parent plant.

  • Grows up to 8-12 in. tall (20-30 cm) and 6-12 in. wide (15-30 cm).
  • Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun. Water moderately in summer and keep dry in winter. Allow soil to completely dry in between waterings. Drought tolerant.
  • Propagate by stem cuttings, segments which easily root after being removed.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Susceptible to fungal diseases if over-watered.
  • Native to Argentina.
