Ajania pacifica (Gold and Silver Chrysanthemum)

Gold and Silver Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum pacificum, Dendranthema pacificum

Prized for its handsome foliage, Ajania pacifica (Gold and Silver Chrysanthemum) is a sprawling rhizomatous perennial forming a dense mound of deeply lobed, dark green leaves, 2 in. long (5 cm), marked with a showy, silvery-white margin. Great-looking during of the growing season, the lush variegated foliage makes this species a great groundcover. As an added bonus, small, button-like, yellow flowers borne in terminal clusters, 4 in. across (10 cm), smother the plant in late fall, adding some of the brightest color in the late season garden. Easy to grow, insect and disease resistant, Ajania pacifica is also a lovely addition to the front of a mixed border and makes a wonderful container plant.

  • Typically grows up to 12-18 in. tall (30-45 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm).
  • Performs best in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. Provide light afternoon shade in warm summer areas and excellent drainage. Good drought tolerance.
  • Perfect for borders, in rock gardens or as a groundcover.
  • Extremely easy growing plant with no serious pest and disease issues.
  • Taller stems may be pinched back in early summer to promote plant vigor and lower plant height.
  • Propagation is easy by springtime division or summertime cuttings.
  • Native to Japan.
