Arenaria montana (Mountain Sandwort) forms a spectacular low evergreen cushion of small, rich, glossy, green, elliptic leaves, almost fully covered by relatively large pure white flowers in late spring or early summer. Great for rock gardens or edging paths, it will quickly fill in the spaces between flagstones, in walls or trough gardens.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Winter hardy, this low-growing perennial grows only 4-6 inches tall (10-15 cm) and spreads 8-12 in. (20-30 cm).
  • Best in full sun or part shade, in well-drained soils. Thrives in poor, sandy soils. Drought tolerant once established
  • Needs adequate moisture during the dry periods in spring and summer.
  • Great choice for rock gardens, edging, groundcover or containers. Deer resistant!
  • Propagate by division in late summer or early fall.
  • Native to the mountainous regions of southwestern Europe
