Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Red Beauty' (Painted Lady Fern)
Painted Lady Fern 'Red Beauty', Japanese Painted Fern 'Red Beauty', Athyrium 'Red Beauty'
Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Red Beauty' (Painted Lady Fern) is a striking deciduous fern forming a pretty rosette of arching, lacy fronds. Emerging green, the graceful fronds often develop a silvery gray coloring, with a contrasting burgundy-red flush to the stems and midribs. Slowly spreading, this fern adds elegance to the shade garden or containers. Perfect for brightening up a dark or shady garden area, plant this graceful fern in drifts and underplant with small, early flowering bulbs, such as snowdrops (Galanthus), as these will appear before the fronds, extending the season of interest of your planting. This painted lady fern makes an excellent groundcover for moist shady sites.
- Grows up to 12 in. tall (30 cm) and 20 in. wide (50 cm).
- Performs best in part shade to full shade in fertile, humus-rich, neutral to acid, moist but well-drained soils. Do not allow the soil to dry out. Provide a sheltered location.
- This plant is a great choice for shady beds and borders, cottage gardens, woodland gardens or underplanting shrubs or roses.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
- Dead or damaged fronds may be removed as necessary.
- Propagate by division in spring
