Clarkia purpurea (Winecup Clarkia)
Winecup Clarkia, Purple Clarkia, Winecup Fairyfan
Native to western North America, Clarkia purpurea (Winecup Clarkia) is a showy annual wildflower boasting ravishing bowl-shaped flowers from mid-spring to mid-summer. The flowers are formed of 4 petals in shades of pink, purple, or rich wine red. They are often adorned with a spot of pink or red in the middle. The flowers are open in the daytime and closed at night. Borne on erect, reddish stems lined with linear to lance-shaped leaves, they give way to dry capsules, which split open when mature to release their numerous seeds. Found in a variety of habitats, including grassland, chaparral, foothill woodland, yellow pine forest, and openings in mixed conifer forest, Winecup Clarkia is adaptable to many soil types. Bees and butterflies are attracted to this charming beauty, making it a good choice for bee or butterfly gardens. Easy to grow, and low maintenance, Winecup Clarkia is suitable for beds and borders, wildflower gardens, and meadows. Plant in drifts for great impact and make sure you have enough for the vase!
- Grows up to 24-36 in. tall (60-90 cm) and 12 in. wide (30 cm). Winecup Clarkia may reseed in the garden in optimum growing conditions.
- Thrives in full sun in a variety of well-drained soils. Needs adequate winter or spring moisture until it finishes blooming. Drought tolerant.
- Great for beds and borders, cottage gardens, prairies, and meadows or containers.
- No serious pest or disease issues.
- Propagate by seed in the fall for spring blooms.
- Native to western North America, including Baja California, California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.
