Layia platyglossa (Coastal Tidytips)
Coastal Tidytips, Common Tidy Tips, Layia platyglossa ssp. campestris, Layia platyglossa var. breviseta, Layia ziegleri
Layia platyglossa (Coastal Tidytips) is a showy annual wildflower boasting bright yellow daisies, 2 in. across (5 cm), tipped in white. Blooming profusely from early spring to early summer, the flowers provide cheerful color in the landscape. They are borne on stout, succulent stems above the foliage of narrowly divided gray-green leaves. They attract many pollinators, especially butterflies. The blossoms are followed by tufted, dandelion-seed-like fruits that are eagerly consumed by birds. Dependable and easy to grow, Coastal Tidytips is an attractive wildflower that is popular in traditional gardens, wildlife gardens, and habitat gardens. It is also used in habitat restoration projects. Spectacular when massed and combined with other wildflowers. It reseeds readily and can form dense colonies.
- Grows up to 5-16 in. tall and wide (12-40 cm).
- Thrives in full sun, in clay or loamy, well-drained soils. Tolerates sandy soils. It is very drought-tolerant. Give occasional water during dry periods. Lean soil is necessary to encourage flowering and keep plants from becoming leggy.
- A wonderful addition to the garden, this enthusiastic bloomer is well suited to beds and borders, banks and slopes, cottage gardens, rock gardens, butterfly gardens, or prairies and meadows.
- No serious pest or disease issues.
- Propagated by seed.
- Native to California, Utah, Baja Mexico.
