Dendrobium kingianum (Pink Rock Orchid)

Pink Rock Orchid

Dendrobium kingianum (Pink Rock Orchid) is usually a lithophyte but is occasionally an epiphytic or rarely a terrestrial orchid. From late winter to mid-spring, it boasts charming racemes, 6 in. long (15 cm), of up to 15 sweet-scented, pink, purple, or white flowers, up to 1.5 in. across (4 cm), adorned with a crimson or purple veined or blotched lip. The delicate flowers last about 2 weeks. They are borne on erect stems bearing between 3 and 6 thin, green, and smooth, evergreen leaves near their tips. Native to eastern Australia, Dendrobium kingianum can be found growing on boulders and in rock crevices in open forests or adjacent to forest creeks, or on cliff faces. Dendrobium nobile is popular in Australian species orchid cultivation and is relatively easy to grow. Like many Australian native plants, it is illegal to collect specimens growing in the wild.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Grows up to 20 in. tall (50 cm).
  • Grow in an open medium with plenty of light, fresh air, and good humidity.
  • In spring and summer, water when compost starts to dry out.
  • In winter, reduce watering and allow a 4-week period of daytime temperature around 46°F (8°C) to encourage flowering.
  • Feed regularly when in growth.
  • Propagate from division or from keikis. Pot keikis when their roots are 1 in. long (2 cm).
  • Generally disease free. Keep an eye out for aphids, glasshouse red spider mites, and mealybugs.
  • Native to eastern Australia.

Tip for reblooming

  • If a plant is healthy but does not produce flowers in a reasonable time, then increase the light, and your orchid should get back on track blooming regularly.
