Dendromecon harfordii (Island Tree Poppy) is a handsome evergreen shrub or small tree clothed with smooth-edged, oval, blue-green leaves, 3 in. long (8 cm). A profusion of bright yellow flowers, 3 in. across (8 cm), smother the plant from spring into summer, and scattered blooms can be enjoyed throughout the rest of the year. A spectacular shrub worthy of inclusion in the landscape. A most beautiful California native that is easy to grow, gets very few pests and diseases, enjoys coastal influence, and is one of the most dependable ever-blooming shrubs.
- Usually grows up to 8-20 ft. tall and wide (2-6 m).
- A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in well-drained soils. Adaptable, it can handle a wide variety of soils, including clay and sand. Does well in dry part shade too. Water once per month in summer after the plant is established. Drought tolerant. Protect from strong winds.
- Perfect as a hedge or as a specimen or accent plant. Great in Mediterranean gardens.
- Prune to shape or to thin after flowering.
- No serious pest and disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids.
- Propagation by seed or stem cuttings. More easily propagated from stem cuttings in winter with intermittent mist and bottom heat.
- Native to Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands, off the coast of southern California.
