Dichelostemma ida-maia, Firecracker Flower, Crimson Californian Hyacinth, Crimson Satin Flower, Floral Firecracker, Vegetable Firecracker, Red flowers

Widely cultivated for its showy flowers, Dichelostemma ida-maia (Firecracker Flower) is a cormous perennial boasting tight umbels packed with 6-20 tubular, brilliant crimson flowers adorned with green reflexed tips. Blooming in early summer, each umbel may have some hanging flowers and some erect fruiting flowers at the same time. Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, they are borne atop straight and slender stems above the foliage of narrow, upright leaves that die down as the flowers open. Adding color and interest, Firecracker Flower is a great choice for the dry garden and looks enchanting laced through other perennials or sun loving grasses.

  • Grows up to 12-24 in. tall (30-60 cm) and 20 in. wide (50 cm). Will slowly spread to form a 3 ft. clump (90 cm).
  • Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Never irrigate once established. Requires a warm, dry dormant season to ripen the corm. Drought tolerant.
  • Great for beds and borders or containers. Spectacular in large sweeping drifts.
  • Virtually disease and pest free
  • Propagate by seed, or remove offsets in late summer.
  • Native to northern California and southern Oregon.
